Since the advent of the 911 model in 1963, roadsters have disappeared from the Porsche range. The brand did, however, produce a one-off 911 roadster in 1983, based on a 911 SC. But the project never came to fruition.
At the end of the economically euphoric 1980s, exclusive models were all the rage. Porsche enjoyed years of prosperity in the second half of the decade. It also decided to take advantage of this market for exclusivity. To this end, customization options for the 911 range expanded, notably with the Flachbau option for the Turbo version. The manufacturer then decided to offer a roadster variant of the 911.
A prototype of the Porsche 911 G series Speedster was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987. This model went into production in 1989. It was a fitting farewell gift for the second-generation 911.
Production figures: 2,274 units, including 171 in the normal version, 2,102 in the Turbo Look version with left-hand drive and 1 in the Turbo Look version with right-hand drive.
